About Angelicus Wines
You will find Angelicus Wines on Angels Road, Manjimup, Western
Australia. It is situated in the Middlesex Valley in the dramatic yet beautiful Pemberton Wine Region of south west Western Australia.
This remakable region of Western Australia features sweeping hills, clean fresh rivers, bubbling brooks and roads lined with giant Karri trees. It was the perfect place for John and Sue Ward to grow their their grapes and turn them into superb wines that reflect the unique qualities of the region.
They established Angelicus Wines in 1997 on the northerly and southerly faces of the hills of Middlesex Valley. The soils of the vineyard are ironstone gravel, the drainage splendid and the climate cool and very similar to that of the Mediterranean. It usually has warm summer days and heavy winter rains, which means that the grapes can develop deep, rich flavours with a natural acid balance.
Their first plantings were of Pinot Noir, after which they added Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Tempranillo. They were meticulous in selecting the the right micro-climates for each variety in order to garner the very best from each of them.
Their vitcultural practices are designed to respect Nature and thus their use of chemical intervention is kept to the barest minimum. Organic measures are also in place; as an example, for pest eradication they introduced chickens and Guinea fowls.
John and Sue upped stumps from Sydney in 1997 to settle in Middlesex Valley. Their goal, after a long search for the right location, was to establish a vineyard that expressed the regional nuances in the wines they produced. They accomplished this goal in spades; their fruit is of the highest quality.
They have a hands-on approach to their winemaking and are learning quickly by practical experience and by trial and error. It is because of people like these two that Pemberton has become so prominent as a bona fide Australian wine region.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are available at their Cellar Door.
