About Cosham Wines
Located in a protected valley at the end of the Bickley Valley in the Perth Hills is the small family-owned and run vineyard, Cosham Wines.
The vineyard is planted on the site of an old orchard that was previously part of a property owned by the Fawkes family. The grapes grown at the vineyard are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
The grapes grow in a gravelly loam with some clay. The soil is well-drained and the vineyard experiences a good rainfall, an abundance of chilling days in the winter months and a good summer ripening period. The vines are grown without the use of insecticides, synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilisers.
Another of the features of the winery is the twilight and evening events in the vineyard that run during the summer months. These have included performances such as ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, performed by Essential Theatre.
All of the wines produced at Cosham are done so with grapes that are hand-picked from the vineyard. The hand-made wines are then aged in underground cellars before being released.
Cosham’s sparkling wine is bottle-fermented using Pinot Noir grapes grown on the vineyard, and made using the traditional methode Champenoise. The vineyard’s Chardonnay is barrel-fermented and made to improve as it ages. The Methode Champenoise is kept on lees for at least three years before its release. Both the Pinot Noir and Shiraz are made in small quantities for “a few special customers” whilst the Cabernet Merlot is their main red variety.
The wines include: 2004 Chardonnay, 2004 Methode Champenoise, 2004 Cabernet Merlot, 2005 Shiraz and 2005 Pinot Noir.
The cellar door opens from 11am to 5pm at weekends and on public holidays. Appointments can be made for openings at other times.
