About Berrigan Wines

The Berrigan Family bought Creighton Farm in 1997. It is located on Creighton Road, Gingin, an area rich in loam soils and plenty of water. The farm dates back to 1842 and was one of the first to be settled in the area. It was used as a cattle station in its first incarnation and later a vineyard was planted.

The proprietors in modern times established the vineyard in 1998 and planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, later adding Merlot and Verdelho.

They believe ‘that premium wines are made in the vineyards’ and use the very best methods of modern viticulture to produce the best quality grapes for their wines. They have a philosophy of seeking a low yield to maximise the fruit flavours and use the barest minimum of chemical intervention in the efforts to eradicate pests.

The estate known as Creighton Farm lies eighty kilometres north of Perth and six kilometres south of Gingin. The Indian Ocean is just twenty kilometres to the west.

The property sits high on the Gingin escarpment and overlooks the coastal plain. It has well-drained alluvial gravel and loam and has the rich red colour of the iron stone country. The Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz are the varieties planted in the red, gravel soils and the Verdelho is planted in the sandy loam soils. The property faces south and enjoys the sunshine and cooling breezes in the afternoon – the Fremantle Doctor, as it is called.

Generally, the climate tends to be of cool, wet winters and warm dry summers, with cool nights. There is little rain during the growing and ripening season from November to late April and this makes for excellent conditions for the production of top quality fruit.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Verdelho are the wonderful varieties available on their web site. Give them a try; you’ll be glad you did.
