About Jane Brook Estate Wines
Jane Brook Estate Wines is located twenty kilometres North East of Perth on Toodyay Road, Middle Swan, Western Australia. It is owned and operated by David and Beverly Atkinson, whose mutual philosophy is that they make no concessions to the efforts to grow the very best grapes in order to produce wines of exceptional quality. Theirs is a long-term goal and one that has already achieved much of that which they desire in the wines.
The brook was discovered in 1829 by John Septimus Roe, the first Surveyor General of the Swan River Company. The name ‘Jane Brook’ followed later, named by Captain James Stirling after Jane Currie, wife of the first harbour master of Fremantle. In 1913, table grapes were planted and this continued until 1954 when 540 litres of red table wine were produced under the name of Vignacourt, by the Mateljan family. And was later bought in 1972 by David and Beverly Atkinson.
They choose the fruit with great care to maximise the natural varietal fruit flavours of the grapes. With a happy mix of modern technology and traditional winemaking techniques they have managed to produce wines that are a credit to them and to this most famous of wine regions.
The micro-climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm summers, which produce high quality grapes and consistently superior vintages. The soils are rich and are comprised of a sandy gravel surface on a deep clay base, giving the grapes every advantage to grow into the very best of fruit.
They use natural organic fertilisers in their viticultural practices and limit the use of chemicals to the barest minimum. They also use minimum mulching and tillage to promote good surface feeding, root development and earthworm activity.
The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Verdelho. They still use the old open concrete fermenters for red wine fermentation, but since 1972, they have installed modern machinery and equipment to boost the efficiency and quality of the winemaking process.
The Jane Brook Estate Wines has installed the latest equipment for ‘methode champenoise’ production, including riddling, disgorging, corking and wiring. Their aim is to become the finest sparkling wine producer in Western Australia.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Malbec, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho are the wonderful varieties available for tasting and purchase at the Cellar Door - open from 10am to 5pm every day (except Good Friday, New Year’s Day and 25th – 28th December) for tastings, sales, lunches and afternoon teas.
