About Jylland Vineyard

Located on Ashby Road Lennard Brook, Gingin, Western Australia is the estate known as Jylland Vineyard. It gets its name from the Scandinavian mainland part of Denmark, Jylland, known in English as Jutland. It is part of the Viking heritage of Edel Grocke, one of the owners, who came to Australia with a passion for winemaking, as well as a love of fine food and glorious sunshine - something which was in short supply in her native Denmark.

The vineyard lies on the south-western slope of Moorgup Hill in the Darling Range, about eighty kilometres north of Perth. It forms part of the Swan District wine region.

The climate is similar to that of the Mediterranean and is perfect for growing high quality grapes. Chenin Blanc is the main varietal of the region and displays a crisp, zestful, clean wine that goes well with any food.

The Verdelho at Jylland Vineyard is another very popular variety that features tones of marri blossom honey that is widespread in the region.

The 2004 and 2005 Chardonnay vintages have both been matured, using central European oak and are what they describe as ‘lightly wooded.’ They were at first concerned about using oak for their whites, but the results have calmed the fears and have proved to be a rather clever way to go. The subtle smoky vanilla tones have markedly improved the wine and turned in into an “‘interesting and compelling’ classification.”

The range of reds is a mixture of old favourites and some new varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz sitting alongside Carnelian, Grenache, Merlot and Tempranillo. All of these make up the popular JRB* label. The reds of all varieties are full-bodied with strong fruit, berry and spices. They are what they are, with no illusions of grandeur. But they are what they describe as ‘honest reds’ that are very drinkable.
